A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration

Project: Exhibition Design and Installation Management

Client: Mississippi Museum of Art

Exhibition on view April 9–September 11, 2022

A Movement in Every Direction, organized by the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art, included work by twelve contemporary artists. Symmetry customized the gallery layout to accommodate multimedia and monumental installations and utilized colors and fonts inspired by branding developed by Studio Pacific. A bold orange red title wall drew visitors down a corridor to the exhibition entrance. Inside the galleries, merlot-colored stripes extended the entire wall height to denote each artist label while white walls shifted visual focus to the artwork. Symmetry designed engagement spaces in and around the galleries that included a thirty-eight-foot-long, undulating wooden wall for visitor feedback. Symmetry worked closely with exhibition co-curators Ryan Dennis (MMA) and Jessica Bell Brown (BMA), artists and their representatives, and MMA and BMA planning teams to ensure that this exhibition premiere supported curatorial vision, served the needs of the artists and artwork, and allowed for an enjoyable and easy visitor experience.
